Today, it seems we’re constantly looking at our 24-hour days in terms of how we’re going to get everything done, so we generally break it up into eight equal hours of rest, work and play as a way to get our head around it.
Not everyone gets or wants eight hours of sleep so we can include other “rest” activities like having downtime, reading or self-care. And work isn’t just about punching a clock: it’s the constant juggling act we do to keep everything going. “Play” is the best part: it includes moments of freedom to be creative, do sports, and pursue other rewards that fuel our mental well-being—the moments that make life sweet.
Part of the VIEV philosophy is that human beings don’t naturally fit into these 8-8-8 silos of time and column subcategories. Time is just a construct, a way to think and operate efficiently. It’s also finite. As much as we always want more of it, the only way to do that is to make the most of the hours we get.
What if we could shake off this construct and instead, thought: any moment could be great? This idea of “greatness in any moment” has been embedded in W.L Gore & Associates’ (our parent company) DNA for more than 40 years. And it’s been proven over time that the model works, evidenced by a steady stream of their innovations and thousands of patents over the years.
We think the world is heading in this fluid, independent and collaborative direction, and that it’s the underpinning of movements like the gig economy, co-create centers and environmental/social community engagement. Within VIEV, it informs our product design philosophy, how we’ve built our company and how we work.
Deconstructing 8-8-8 columns not only opens up a new way to live — it’s a new way to think. It opens your mind to possibilities and makes it easier to find “flow” moments. Once this concept sinks in, instead of thinking you have 24 hours in a day, you may find you have 30.
